- A retrospective on the originators of epic doom metal, Candlemass. Join me on a deep dive into the Swedish metal band from their early days at Nemesis to their most recent 2022 album. Led by founding member bassist Leif Edling, Candlemass has maintained an impressively stable lineup, except for the vocalist position which has been filled by six different singers. The most recognized is perhaps Messiah Marcolin, the monk-outfitted frontman from their '80s music videos and, ultimately, four albums. A huge influence on doom metal and a classic band in their own right, Candlemass has some awesome stuff throughout their career. So, let's check it out!

Candlemass is the Goat of Doom Metal 🐐🐐🐐
Messiah isn’t mentioned nearly enough in the conversation of great metal singers. Basically Europe’s answer to Dio.
Thats so true, barlow, eric adams and midnight on the list too
Messiah. Metal band from Switzerland
He is a great singer but apparently he is difficult to work with
@@Mr.A.Tatlock As are many great singers.
@@AVFtube Yes Messiah is my favourite Candlemass singer. The others are all very good but Messiah has the right image for the band.
Cool little fun fact: Dead from mayhem is in the music video for Bewitched and you can spot him for a split second! or watch the bts footage lol
I had never heard them (only heard the band name) until an afternoon in Paris where I saw a few metalheads standing next to a van and looking at a roadmap and I asked if I could give them directions. They replied that they had to go to the Elysée Montmartre and asked if I could get in the passenger seat and guide them. I accepted and asked them who they were (that's the way to go kids, get in the van with stangers and THEN ask who they are...). That's how I found out they were in Candlemass. They put me on the guest list for the evening and I got the chance to do an interview for a fanzine I was working with. That gig was my first thrash concert, with Nuclear Assault, Acid Reign and Dark Angel. The singer (Messiah Marcolin) was a super friendly guy, very simple and patient with my amateurish, badly prepared interview in broken english.
That’s awesome! Bet that show was a banger too 🤘🏻
@@MetalSchoolChannel It was! As it was my first thrash concert, seeing stage diving for real in person was pretty awesome. Nuclear Assault were pretty good. the audience was amazing, you could feel the honest passion from all the thrashers.
Broken English?
Impossible, because your written English is too good.
Fantastic, interesting comment!
@@macbird-lt8deBroken English was supposedly the Heaviest Metal band in the history of music. But personally I think that the fith Handicapped Wildcat album is the Heaviest Metal album that I have ever heard. Despite the fact that it was released in 1973
Absolutely one of metal's greatest bands.
The secret ingredient to me is Lars on lead guitar. Such melody and emotion
Hard to argue! His solos are pretty amazing.
I love hearing bands being critical of their own music. I just appreciate the honesty.
I can't believe there was no mention of "Samarithan" when discussing Nightfall! That song is beyond amazing, it's magical and inspirational! Their best imo.
I totally agree
I was lucky enough to see Candlemass in the 80s (Messiah era). Love that they're still going.
Cool
These guys deserves all the success they can get. They were from Upplands Väsby which was the hotspot in the mid 80's in Sweden for it's glam/hard rock scene (Europe is from there as well). It must have been very tempting to follow the trends but nah they went their own path. All hail Candlemass!
I got to see them on the Tales Of Creation tour, St Andrew's Hall, Detroit. It was in the middle of a snowstorm, and only a handful of people there. Atheist opened just weeks before Roger died. Messiah stuck the mic in my face for a good portion of the show, so i got to sing along, and meet the whole band and hung out until they closed the venue!! Getting to meet Messiah and Leif was the highlight to a crazy year!!
They need to reunite with Messiah and put out one more killer album before it's over. Nothing they ever did tops that classic lineup. He just adds a certain energy and chemistry which makes Candlemass great. Surely grown men can momentarily set aside differences to go out on top?
They don’t need to do anything that doesn’t feel right for all parties involved. Surely a grown man can accept the fact that things change and we’re lucky to have experienced that lineup for as long as it lasted.
Messiah was a complete horror to deal with. Lief and Messiah clashed quite a lot. Ex singer from Solitude Aeturns Robert Lowe took over as singer. Lief said Lowe was much easier to deal with.
Man that would be amazing
The jump in quality from Nemesis to Candlemass is astounding!
Johan, Messiah and Rob are fucking great!
Fan since 1986.
Candlemass Rules. Enough said!!!
The band that got me into “Doom Metal”
Incredible writing
Candlemass is definitely one of my favorite bands of all time. I love the first album and the ones with Messiah. I don't think they have put out anything that was bad even when they experimented with other styles.
I went through a huge Candlemass binge a month ago and God damn was I missing out.
IMO not a bad album through the whole discography.
Strong song writing, loved the vocals on every era, and just the overall feel of the atmosphere. Top tier band.
The first time I heard Candlemass, it was the album Nightfall and I realized that I was looking for that great sound and those incredible sensation without even knowing it...
I was just trying to die in solitude but you dropped this awesome video
For me Lasse is the most underrated solo guitarist ever in the Metal scene. His solos are amazing and always fit the song perfect.
Candlemass, one of my all time favorites. And, being an author, they gave lots of inspiration to me. I will always associate their early albums to my time of intense Pen and Paper roleplaying, "Ancient Dreams" accompanying me through the years. I published a fantasy adventure based on "Bearer of Pain" and a short story inspired by "King of the grey islands". "Solitude" helped me through dark times, "Where the Runes still Speak", "Into the unfathomed Tower" and "Samarithan" (and many more) still give me goosebumps every single time I hear them. Lost track of the newer stuff, but now I am inspired to have a closer look. Thank you, great video!
How does one become an author, your comment is interesting. Not that I will ever be an author but it fascinates me that that is what you do and your story of finding inspiration in Candlemass. May I ask what year t was back then
@@hanglooserecluse Oh, I started with writing articles and stories for Fantasy Roleplaying games. That was around 1990, I was about 16 years old when iI started. Over time, I decided and managed to complete my first novel. Attended some courses, wrote more books - it is one of the things I love most in life, writing my own stories. Candlemass accompanied me and was really inspiring in the process.
@@hanglooserecluse You need to read a lot of history books , to understand how people were living in the past, what were their concerns , their struggles etc, how the political and military situations affected them. And also read mythology, and psychology and sociology.
History books don’t cut it pal.
Formal History is the study of primary sources.
The psychology and sociology books both sound ineffective in their own ways.
Especially sociology.
I listened to the Ancient Dreams album yesterday in my car. I absolutely loved it. One awesome song after the other.
Best trad doom band. Love ‘em.
been a fan of the band since 1991. One of my biggest influences too when it comes to how I create slow dark riffs and melodies
Been a fan since 1981 when I had a dream that Epicus Doomicus Metalicus album would be released in 5 years
Been a fan since 1992, when I bought "Nightfall". I was listening basically to death and thrash metal only at that point, but I was immediately caught. Love their first three albums.
Whatever I do on guitar end up sounding like candlemass. That deep I am into them.
Candlemass is one of my band’s biggest influences and it’s always satisfying when folks are able to point it out.
Bewitched is the greatest metal video ever
I was 15 when I went to my first metal concert, Dynamo Open Air 1988. When I entered the festival, I went straight to the front a band I didn't know, but with very interesting looking singer just started a song of which I later understood it was Candlemass At The Gallows End. It was epic!
My favorite Candlemass albums are:
1.Nightfall because it features my favorite Candlemass song on it which is Bewitched,
2.Death Magic Doom because it's part of the Robert Lowe era,
3.Door To Doom because Astorolus-The Great Octopus features Tony Iommi of Black Sabbath as a guest guitarist,
4.Epicus Doomicus Metallicus because the title's a dead giveaway that it's Epic Doom Metal
Candlemass ‘05 is one of my favorite metal albums ever! Black Dwarf, Witches, Seven Silver Keys etc. the whole album is monstrous! I got introduced to them after listening to a demo of Witches with Tony Martin on vocals during a deep dive into his discography.
From the 13th sun is an amazing album..So psychedelic and heavy..From the beginning to the end its like one long song altogether..So different from the others, thats why lots of people have a hard time with it..But if the name Candlemass wasnt on the cover then what???Is that the problem??Its a masterpiece...!!!
Killed it in denver 1st time here ever. And only 3 shows in the US this year how lucky for us hope they come back left wanting more
I discovered Candlemass in 1989 when I found the Live album on cassette in an American convenience store in upstate New York, I'm from Canada. Instant fan. They proved to me that all metal doesn't have to be all speed. The live versions of all their classics were better than anything I'd ever heard before.
Where in upstate NY?
Troy?
Albany?
It was in Watertown I think, we were on our way to Darien Lake Six Flags for a long weekend in the summer of '89. It was one of those independent Department stores, like a K-mart, but not. Any way, they had one of those upright rotating Cassette racks that sat on one corner of like, the glass display cases for the watches, y'know? It had your usual crap selection with stuff like Simon and Garfunkel's Bridge Over Troubled Water, Kenny and Dolly Parton, Travis Tritt, the Footloose sound track et cetera, BUT, LO AND BEHOLD, there at the bottom of the fouth side, Pleasures of the Flesh by Exodus and Candlemass Live, $5.99 each. I was 15, one of the greatest moments of my life.

Awesome 🤟
Just watched 5 minutes so far but this is great. Candlemass is such an amazing band. Love 'em.
A greater lesson in Northern Doom. Sweden should be proud. You should also be proud of this fine piece of Metalworks. My quest for Candlemass isn't over , there are still 2 or 3 hard to find RECENT albums that i must go after.
I’ve given this a thumbs up before I’ve even watched it. 🤘🏻🤘🏻🤘🏻 At The Gallows End is just pure Doom magic! 🤘🏻🤘🏻🤘🏻🤘🏻🤘🏻🔥and what a voice Messiah had back in the day 👏🏻🤘🏻
Excellent video! Thanks for all you did. Candlemass forever!🤘🏻🥃
If only we could get a Trouble/Candlemass tour…🤘🏻
I am a fan of My dying bride, but when I heard the term epic doom metal, I get curious and my first cds were Solitude Aternus Through the darkest hour and Saint Vitus C.O.D. and then I learned about the godfathers of epic doom metal CANDLEMASS.
My dying what?
Epicus Doomicus Metallicus, Nightfall & Anceient Dreams...epic doom metal gold. I love Candlemass, thanks! 👊💯👍
I used to play Candlemass for my mom back in 92. As an opera singer she appreciated Marcolin's vocals & said that his vocals were top notch professional.
I used to play Deicide for my mom. As a God fearing, country music fan, she told me to turn that s@#t off.
@@thatlittlevoice6354 🤣Bro I hope you didn't play Kill The Christian
@@thatlittlevoice6354Hahahaha
I first discovered Candlemass in 1990 when I ran across "Tales of Creation" on cassette in one of those little music stores they used to have at the mall. I thought, "This oughtta be interesting," and so began my doom metal journey. Ch. VI is criminally underrated, by the way!
This band never came into my vision. Excellent, all of it. Music sounds crafted for a great singer.
Hot take - From the 13th Sun is one of the best albums from them. I wrote it off at first and stuck to Messiah's/Rob's albums (Clearsight was the very first song i heard from them and i was hooked), but after going back to 13th Sun, I have to put that in the top 2 or 3 albums. It's so insanely unique, the vocals are haunting, and with appropriate "mood enhancers", it's an entire experience just listening to it through headphones in a dark room. Acquired taste, sure, but amazing.
Came across the video of bewitched about a year ago, and so thankful I did this band was incredible.
I remember seeing them live somewhere around `89/`90, I think they were opening for King Diamond. And to this day it's astounding me, how a band with such a depressive vibe in their music can spread so much fun and positive energy on stage. We had an excellent party, dancing, moshing, banging and singing along with smiling faces everywhere.
I saw Candlemass open for King Diamond on the Conspiracy tour 🤘👑🤘
It was awesome 🤘👑🤘
@@kimjuuljensen Right, the Conspiracy tour. I wasn't sure, if it was this one, or if it was on the Them tour.
Even though I'm more into Power Metal along with (Traditional) Heavy Metal and not much into Doom Metal, there was a time I did listen to Candlemass before. I mainly like them because of them being a different kind of Black Sabbath with heavy riffs and sort of a dark epic feel. I may listen to them occasionally, but Candlemass remains as the only Doom Metal band I like.
Have you listened to Solitude Aeturnus? They are pretty much in the same vein of Candlemass (they are of the same genre called Epic Doom) and also the singer of this band (Robert Lowe) in the mid 2000s joined Candlemass as the singer.
@@darkmarv8045 I heard of them, but never really got into them.
I'm not too much into doom metal, but Candlemass is one of my favourite bands out there. Robert Lowe's albums with them are probably the most up my alley, really heavy and dark. His vocals are great on all three.
Great vid as usual!
I just added four more Candlemass albums to my collection. Got a new stereo in the car. Time to go for a drive.
Favourite song: Demons gate. Favourite singer Messiah. First time I heard them I was hooked 1987 Nightfall, I was 16.🤘🤘
Favourite song for me is The Bleeding Baroness
my favorite doom metal band and my all time 5 favorite Candlemass Tracks:
1.) A Sorcerer's Pledge
2.) Black Stone Wielder
3.) At The Gallows End
4.) Black Eyes
5.) Black Dwarf
And no! Black is not my favorite color, just a coincidence with the song titles lol No Black Candles on my list unless we were speaking of the band OZ! I still have that Hard N Heavy VHS. Personally, I consider the 3 albums that followed S/T as Solitude Aeturnus albums. EDM has been my overall fave album of theirs for decades and still is.
Been a Fan of this Band Epicus, Doomicus, Metallicus Is Remarkably one of the most Best Swedish Metal Album ever released, If yet The best Swedish Metal Album of the 80's And that's a fact I wanted to have a copy of this to rise in the Sorcerers Pledge was a great epic theme of the band, All of there Albums were epic And Well Arranged That's Doom for sure.
Peaceville Records included an awesome interview on the 2007 remaster of Nightfall that talks about how Messiah was a huge fan of Candlemass and how he basically wouldn't stop bothering them about joining to include moving to their hometown just to prove how serious he was. So grateful that they made him a member because Candlemass is one of the best Doom bands of all time. Completely underrated. Messiah is also one of the best Metal vocalists of all time as well. \m/\m/
I love this band so much. People can have their own opinion on each era's sound, but you just can't deny they always had an amazing singer at any moment of their career. Candlemass has never had a single bad vocalist, ever
Damn it, I was about to go to sleep!! Now I gotta watch this.
Messiah's voice is so melodic and beautiful, I nearly did nod off to sleep during my lunch break when I was watching this the other day 😂
YESSSS!! 🙌
You did it... I've been waiting.
Thank you for all the great videos!! Next...Solitude Aeturnus and Saint Vitus PLEASE 🖤
Solitude…Aaahhhhhhh! Great, great band.
ASTOROLUS - THE GREAT OCTOPUS has a Guest solo by some guy named Tony Iommi. Not worth mentioning but i was just gonna let you know have a great day.
I was at that 91' Bayshore, LI show. What a blast!!!!! Same year I saw Metal Church there to. Headbanged til my neck hurt!!!
It's really quite tragic: they had something special initially, a winning formula, were essentially pioneers and they never even realised this. Nothing really ever came of it. Pissed it all away. Classic example here of the enormous damage inflated egos and bickering can do.
As a fan of more, shall we say, optimistic metal genres I still have to admire the guitar work. And particularly Messiah's vocal strength.
Phenomenal band, easily one of the greats. Metal School brings it in spades.
Had the Nemesis album on tape back in the day and couldn't stop playing it from how Heavy it is. Messiah was also in a band called Mercy before he joined Candlemass; he's on their Witchburner album.
Great band. "Darkness in paradise" is still the etalon of doom metal.
That ' Groovy Doom Riff' from Black Eyes used to be called Children of the Grave. Back in 1971
Candlemass Live At Fryshuset is EPIC, I can put it on repeat
08:27 those look like mugshots from 'bad hair prison', hehehe. Another great video, my friend. You crossed off a big one here! Too bad there's no mention of the Memento Mori albums Messiah made after his first stint in Candlemass, but that would've made it too long, I guess. Great job, hope you keep it up for years to come!
Dude I'm one of the many editors on Metal Archives. Also on Candlemass I love their song Crystal Ball on their debut album. Good video man.
That’s awesome! Love what you guys do over there. It’s a fantastic resource and I often wonder how many people it must take to handle the influx of bands and information. Thanks for watching!
@@MetalSchoolChannelI love researching on obscure 80's metal bands. I help out by getting in contact with the artist and I interview them for the missing important information. Most MA editors just what you do on your videos do deeper research on the bands that they are researching on. Me I dig deeper in contacting the band members themselves because they hold the information that not many people know about their music. Sometimes they share their unreleased material rear demos, and story about their music that's the real hidden treasures to me hidden by obscure bands members.
Thank you for making me discover one more amazing band and discography.
Messiah>everyone else
Yeah, Bror was definitely the most fitting vocalist Candlemass ever had, closely followed by the og Johan, then by Rob Lowe and lastly Mat Léven (who had previously worked with Yngwie Malmsteen).
Personally, he's my 3rd favorite metal singer ever.
Yeah, I share the common opinion that Messiah was their best vocalist, im a sucker for the Opera influenced metal vocals and loved him in Mercy also. Speaking of Opera, I don't think Vikstrom is a bad vocalist at all, but he's definitely more of a power metal or an AOR vocalist, but seems like a decent fit for Therion. Though I prefer the straight Operatic vocals (and Choirs) with Therion as well.
@@HudsonValleyVHS You mean Andreas Vikström of Screamer, right?
I also think Bengt Göransson (Mindless Sinner) is awesome…. I mean how he can hit a blisteringly high note (for example a G#5 with no build up (although it happens rarely) is astoundin🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘
Yeah I recognize the band by his voice and find his voice to be divine and dark all at once
Messiah the best vocals of Candlemass
Incarnation of Evil is by far my favourite Candlemass song. The atmosphere is just staggering, heavy, crawling, slithering, truly an Incarnation of Evil.
Also Black Messiah from the Nemesis EP is literally a demo of Incarnation of Evil .
@DarkMarv Yes, of course. The original was already a classic. With the soaring vocals of Messiah and the punchy production, the song became even better.
After watching your video on Candlemass, it makes me want to sit in my basement with all the lights off and crank the first 3 albums again haven’t listen to them in a bit, and I might throw in King Of The Grey Islands also
I always loved heavy metal with lots of speed, but Candlemass is the exception 😊
Oh boy what a treat!
The reunion album from 2005 is so damn good! It isn’t talked about enough
Chapter VI is criminally overlooked. It lacks certain darkness and epicness, but it's still powerful af.
I always jam bewitched music with few amigos of mine that are into doom/black especially since the fact per ohlin from mayhem is feature in this after being part of “Morbid” this never gets old & mostly important as one my first actual doom metal bands I was exposed around 2020 when I was getting into metal genres I wasn’t aware of.
LOVE YOUR CHANNEL! I went all the way through several bands you covered. you led me to discover soooooo many new bands that then have connections to others!! I’m also very excited to go through Krokus
Glad to hear it! Thanks for watching
😊🤘🏻
Yeah me too, a real treasure trove here on the channel.
Never listened to these guys til now. Thank you for helping me discover another titan in the metal genre.
Maybe we'll see Trouble and Pentagram videos next.
OMG Trouble are awesome.
I really like the two first Lowe albums and see them live on that Jalometalli gig. After that i found the self titled album and the old classics. But still first two Lowe albums are my favorite albums. The darker tone and Lowe vocals 🤘
There are not enough Candlemass videos on RUclips. Thanks for adding this one.
King of the grey islands is a fucking classic
A Very Important DOOM GOTH band from the 80's.. They are Kick Ass! They define modern DOOM for Sure!
The OLD stuff I Really do not ecuate to Black Sabbath, but to "Christian Death" band, which is "Death Rock"!
"Nightfall" ISa tempus of a Mighty Album! DOOM Unleashed! Without this we do not So many bands!
Wow, I forgot how good this band is.. I going to have to revisit them and jam out
THANK YOU for doing a video on Candlemass! I requested from you about a year ago and you followed thru! Much appreciated and a fan for life!
I’m a lover of Dio, he is beyond words. I did not know about this band till about 3 years ago. No clue how I missed them or Messiah back in the 80’s. I watched Headbangers Ball MTV etc all the time. Messiah is the best opera style / opera singer EVER. No one is like him. UNTOUCHABLE. Would love to see him in the band and also with a lead role in a top opera house. 💝
I am 31. I went through a "metal phase" in my teens and I eventually stuck with ska and punk in my adult days. But make no mistake, I never lost touch with my love for metal. Candlemass is like one of those bands I show metalheads to check out even as a former metalhead. (Maybe the reality is "once a metalhead, always a metalhead"). Candlemass was one of those bands I would often revisit and just melt my bad days away when things got grim. I'm more into thrash metal, but Candlemass is a great Doom Metal band that deserves to be celebrated for generations to come. Cheers! Solidarity! Long live metal! 🤘😈
Thank you for making this, it was very entertaining to watch and it gave me an insight in the late 90's era (of which I didn't know much) of one of my top favorite bands. I laughed a lot with your description of the Dying illusion video! And I can't believe you didn't mention The edge of heaven!
Great work and very nicely done!
Loved Tales Of Creation I listened to it over and over again
My alltime favorite bands!
And for good reason too; being rightfully praised as the KINGS of Epic Doom Metal, Candlemass has had no shortage of exceptional lead singers like for example Johan Langquist(who’s back in the band after almost 30 years) & American Robert Lowe(who previously sang with Solitude Aeternus), but Messiah (who actually sang for another Swedish Metal band called Mercy before joining them) is by far the best known of the bunch 🤘 🇺🇸 😌 👍 😊
One of the best bands ever... 4 me
Robert Lowe is a killer vocalist
Hell yeah!
Thank you for this amazing document. I love Candlemass since their beginning.
I love 'From The 13th Sun'!
Amazing job! Been listening to Candlemass since late 90s and it's always in my player from time to time!
Also, maybe you could mention affiliation with the amazing Mike Wead and Memento Mori, especially because of Messiah. Good job mentioning Krux and Abstrakt Algebra! 🖤
I'm amazed by the fact that Leif Edling seems to dislike so much of what I love with Candlemass, as some songs, Messiah's vocal e.t.c. I can agree that ''Incarnation of evil' and 'Epistle nro 81' didn't fit in the album. But I do think that 'Under the oak', 'Incarnation of evil', 'Epistle no 81' and 'The sorcerers pledge' should have been recorded with Messiah and released in some way.
I really liked A Sorceror's Pledge.
The hole Album is amazing EPIC Stuff
Not to cover Solitude Aeturnus now would be criminal... 😉 Great episode..!
Solitude was Candle Masses biggest fans. Got the privilege of working for their road Crue. Great times!!
Your channel is a blessing from the Metal Gods! Candlemass is a fave of mine! Great vid!
Drama, emotion, mixed with crushingly heavy riffs, the band is so underated
Epicus, Ancient Dreams and Nightfall were the sound tracks to my youth! One of the greatest bands of ALL time!
Ancient dreams, Epicus, Nightfall and tales are the best of all
Another great video 🤘 Would love to see a Trouble retrospective in the future. Keep up the good work 👏
